How To Learn SEO – The Basics

Understanding SEO and having the ability to apply the strategies to your website is essential in enjoying more visitors being directed to your site via different search engines. More visitors results in more interest in your products and services which relates into greater profit.

Like learning any new subject, it is always best to start with the fundamentals.

1. Understanding How It Works

Before you can implement any of the strategies, you need to know how SEO works to improve your ranking on a specific search engines’ results page. There are two elements that search engines use to categorize your webpages – crawling and indexing.

– Crawling. The search engine sends ‘spiders’ to crawl through the worldwide web identifying specific content and then returning it to their databases.
– Indexing. The relevant information is then indexed and stored in the database. Information that is relevant to the website is indexed.

When an internet user types in a search query that is relevant to the content contained on your webpages, the web address will be returned on the webpage. SEO helps ensure that the web address ranks higher on the results page, through the use of unique, relevant and high quality content, to have greater visibility and attract more visitors.

2. Adding Content

There are four important elements to adding content to your website. Content must be:

– Unique. If you copy, plagiarize or simply duplicate information that is already contained on your website or from other sites, the information will simply be overlooked by ‘spiders’ crawling the internet and the relevant information will not be indexed.
– Relevant. Information that is not relevant to the function of you business will simply result in indexing that does not result in the right type of visitors to your website.
– Quality. It is very important that your content is of a high quality that is easy for visitors to understand and read and has no spelling, grammar or factual errors. Content should be short, sweet and to the point.
– Regular. Content needs to be added as regularly as possible. The more often content is added, the more regularly a website is likely to be crawled and re-indexed.

Content can be in the form of blogs (short posts of 100-300 words) or articles (medium length from 300-700 words). Longer content can be added but is not always ideal as search engine algorithms often only crawl the heading and first few paragraphs of a document.

3. Keywords

Keywords or phrases are an essential part of SEO. Adding specific keywords or phrases to the content that is relevant to the business will simplify the crawling and indexing process. The keyword should be used in the heading or title of your content, in the first paragraph (preferably the first line) as well as throughout the body of the article.

There are two important elements to keyword selection – identification and analysis.

– Identification. Identifying keywords that will have a high search volume and low competition is essential. In other words, keywords that are more likely to be used in search queries and less likely to be used by the competition. Keywords must be relevant, form the foundation of the content and make sense within the context of the content.
– Analysis. Keyword analysis helps identify the keywords that are most successful in attracting traffic to a webpage. There are a range of different analytical tools that can be used in this process.

It is very important not to load or stuff content with keywords as this will negatively impact SEO. Search engine algorithms are designed to overlook content that use the same keyword too many times or content that doesn’t make sense.

4. Links

All content should have links both to pages contained on the website and to external websites that are relevant to the content. Links are the pathways that are used by ‘spiders’ to crawl the internet. Without links, content or documents are more likely to be overlooked and will not be indexed. Content without links is basically useless.

Links are most optimal when added to the keyword or phrase that is being used in the content. There should be at least one internal and one external link contained in the body of the content. However, this can be dependent on the length of the content where longer articles or blogs may contain more links.

In the same way that keyword loading or stuffing can have a negative impact on SEO, so can adding to many links or links that are irrelevant to the content.

5. Do-It-Yourself SEO

The basic SEO process may seem simple and easy to achieve without the assistance of an SEO consultant. However, the task can become time-consuming and tedious over time. If you do have the time to expend on identifying keywords, writing your own content and then analyzing the success, then you may need to fulfill a few other requirements. Not everybody can write quality content to be added to their webpages. It can be difficult to put into words the thoughts that you have in your head and even more complicated to ensure that the content makes sense and is relevant. Most people struggle to write blogs and articles at the outset but may find that it gets easier the more often they write.

It may be advisable to take a writing course before attempting to add your own content to your website. Remember that high quality articles that have good grammar and correct spelling will add value while low quality content will detract from the value.

6. The Process

SEO will not provide overnight success, even if you are able to add a large number of articles or blogs to your website immediately. It is a slow process and may take days or even weeks before any progress up the search results ladder are seen. Don’t lose hope and keep in mind that part of the process is adding content regularly. It is not just the amount of content contained on your site, but how often new information is added that can make the greatest difference.
